The thesis statement of argumentative essays is usually central to the argument of the paper. In this section, the author describes a topic and provides an opinion regarding it. Sometimes this is called a "theory" and sometimes it is called a "proposition." Authors may argue against a specified thesis statement, a general thesis statement or even against the entire premise(s) in the argument. In some cases, there is no main argument, but just an assumption or a polemical point that is used to support the other views presented in the essay.
An essay is, in general, a literary piece that presents the author's argument, but sometimes the meaning is unclear, overlapping with that of an essay, a report, a short story, pamphlet, and even a novel. Essays used to be sub-divided into formal and casual. In recent years, the distinction has become blurred and essays can be categorized on both sides: as literary and as nonliterary (also known as academic or popular).

On the other hand, an essayist may use his or her thesis essay to explore a particular area of literature, give an interpretation of a specific figure or people, present an interpretive summary of literature, discuss a range of literature or set forth a main idea or theme. Students typically do not write thesis essays; in fact, the term is usually used by instructors when they discuss a student's thesis. Rather, students use essays examples to explore a particular area of study.
