The introduction of your essay should give your readers a clear picture of why you are writing your essay, why you believe that you are qualified to present your argument, and why you think your position is the correct one. Once you have developed this opening statement, your next paragraphs should offer your readers additional supporting evidence and proof that your main points are true.

A five-paragraph outline will allow you to develop a clear direction and structure for your essay. In fact, many universities and colleges require five paragraph outlines for all students who intend to write a formal academic composition. However, even though this type of outline is recommended for those who lack writing experience, it can be used by the more experienced student to help develop a clearer and more organized outline that meets the needs of his or her project.
