If your essay will be read at a college or university, it is likely that an instructor will require you to write and submit an essay outline. The purpose of an essay outline is to provide you with cues about the style and structure of your essay. The most important part of your outline is the introduction. This is the section in which you lay out your main argument and present supporting evidence to support it. It is here that you should decide whether your essay will be a research essay on a literature review, or a personal essay. In short, your introduction is the critical first step in your essay submission.
Your introduction should not be too long; three to four sentences are usually sufficient. Even so, you should strive to keep your introduction concise, to the point, and to capture the attention of the reader. One way to do this is to use proper essay formatting. A common error when writing the introduction is to use big fancy words that may seem pompous, over-the-top, or arrogant. Such language is not appropriate for an essay example.
An essay is, in general, a literary piece that presents the author's argument, but sometimes the meaning is unclear, overlapping with that of an essay, a report, a short story, pamphlet, and even a novel. Essays used to be sub-divided into formal and casual. In recent years, the distinction has become blurred and essays can be categorized on both sides: as literary and as nonliterary (also known as academic or popular).
Make sure you are completely familiar with the topic. This will make it easier to write the essay. Look for essay examples or other essays that you read. Reading other essays will also help you learn how to write the essay. If you find that you have a problem with this step, then start researching about the topic a little more. The more you research, the better you will become at it.
Essays can be written in many different ways. One method is called the content based format. In this method, all the ideas in the essay are discussed but the focus is on the content of the essay rather than the specific arguments. Another format is the argumentative format which describes the body of the essay and the various arguments presented. Finally there is the descriptive format which describes the nature of the information, the purpose of the essay and the audience. The last type is called the perspective-based format in which the author writes about his own experience and how he came to the conclusions he discusses in the essay.
A thorough proofreading of any essay should not simply involve looking for grammatical errors, but checking for everything that might be taken for granted in a typical assignment. The essay must be carefully examined for coherence. An example of this would be a discussion of four different statements made in the course of an essay. One of the statements should be the central thesis statement. The other three statements could all be supporting arguments, each one providing a detailed explanation of what the first one intends to argue.
